Starting at the Herring Cove trailhead, you’ll enter a lush temperate rainforest, filled with moss-covered hemlocks, spruces, and yellow cedars, while passing by stunning waterfalls. As you ascend about 600 feet, you’ll reach Beaver Lake, where you can enjoy a scenic loop around the shore, often home to eagles, ducks, and other birds. Along the way, you'll take in 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and walk through the unique muskeg. Your guide will share fascinating stories about Sitka’s rich history, as well as insights into the local flora and fauna. If time permits, there’s an additional stop at Whale Park. From the boardwalk, you might spot wildlife, and if you’re visiting in late fall or early spring, you could even catch a glimpse of humpback whales. Level of difficulty: Moderate/Difficult. The hiking time is about 2.5 hours. There is a steep grade at the beginning and end of this trek, with the middle section around the lakes having little elevation change. This hike is for those who are accustomed to regular activity and participants will need to be physically fit. Rock steps and boardwalk sections are often slippery. The trail has some areas where footing is difficult, including some uneven stepping stones and log steps. Number of participants & Age: This is a private guided hiking tour, and you can have up to 7 participants. There is no minimum age for private hikes, but please read our FAQ page for more information on age recommendations and transportation requirements for children 7 and under. A parent, a legal guardian, or an adult family member must accompany participants under 18. Meeting Location: We can pick you up at your place of choice (your hotel, cruise dock, Airbnb, etc.) Included: Transportation to and from the trail, a knowledgeable local guide, bear and wilderness safety, light snacks, hiking poles, mosquito repellent, and a bottle of water (but encourage participants to bring their own when possible to reduce single-use plastic waste).
