Harbor Mountain To Alpine Hut

About This Adventure:

Unlike most hikes in Southeast Alaska that begin beneath a canopy of trees, Harbor Mountain offers a completely different perspective. By gaining elevation of about 1,800 feet on the drive to the trailhead, we begin the hike above much of the forest, where open alpine terrain reveals a side of Sitka that relatively few visitors experience. From the ridgeline, it becomes easier to understand the geography that shapes this part of Alaska. Sitka Sound stretches below, islands dot the coastline, and volcanic Mount Edgecumbe rises across the water. On clear days, the views extend for miles in nearly every direction, offering a broader perspective of the landscape than is possible from most forest trails. The alpine environment itself is also unique. Short growing seasons, and heavy winter snowpack create conditions that support a very different collection of plants than those found along the coast. During summer, wildflowers bloom across the mountainside. In early fall, the tundra-like vegetation often turns shades of red, orange, and gold. There will be plenty of opportunities for photos, questions, and watch soaring eagles along the way. At the hut there will be time for snacks and taking in the surrounding nature. Because this is a private guided hike, we can adjust the pace to match your group and spend more time exploring the features that interest you most. This hike is a great choice for guests who want get away from crowds, take in expansive views and experience Southeast Alaska's unique alpine landscape. -Tour Details- Duration: 4.5 hours Time on Trail: Approximately 3.5 hours Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging. While the drive eliminates much of the elevation gain that would normally be required to reach alpine terrain, this is still considered a moderate to challenging hike. The trail includes uneven footing, rocky sections, and rolling elevation changes. Guests should be comfortable hiking on natural terrain and and have footwear with good traction. This hike is similar difficulty as Herring Cove/Beaver Lake Trail, only slightly longer.
