Trek Description

Trek Description: The Harbor Mountain trail to the alpine shelter offers excellent views of Sitka Sound, Baranof Island, and Mt. Edgecumbe volcano. We will drive up an old WWII gravel road to the trailhead at about 2,000 feet. Thhike is over rolling hills that are adorned with vibrant wildflowers in the summer and breathtaking fall colors in the autumn. The trail heads along the side of Harbor Mountain, across alpine meadows, before reaching the Gavan Hill Hut. There will be time to rest and take in the scenery at the hut before heading back to the trailhead. Level of Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult. The hiking time is about 3.5 hours. This trek's distance and uneven surfaces require participants to be accustomed to physical outdoor recreation. This hike is for those accustomed to regular activity and participants need to be physically fit. Trail Condition: There are roots, rocks, log steps, and boardwalk sections that can be slippery when wet. Group Size & Age: This private trek can have up to 7 participants and recommends participants to be 7 years of age or older. Tongass Treks cannot legally transport children under 65 pounds and less than 57 inches tall unless you provide a car seat or booster seat for your child. Meeting Location: We can pick you up at your place of choice (your hotel, cruise dock, ferry, etc.) Included: Transportation to and from the trail, a knowledgeable local guide, bear and wilderness safety, snacks, hiking poles, sunscreen, and a bottle of water (we encourage participants to bring their own water bottle when possible to reduce single-use plastic waste).
