Trek Description
The Journey: With 360-degree views as you hike above the treeline in the alpine, the Harbor Mountain trail to the alpine shelter offers excellent views of Sitka Sound, Baranof Island, and Mt. Edgecumbe volcano. We will drive up an old WWII gravel road to the trailhead at about 2,000 feet. Hike over rolling hills adorned with vibrant wildflowers in the summer and breathtaking fall colors in the autumn. View eagles and ravens that are frequently soaring on the wind currents. The trail takes you along the side of Harbor Mountain, across alpine meadows, before reaching the Gavan Hill Hut. There will be time to rest and take in the scenery at the alpine hut before heading back to the trailhead. Level of Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult. The hiking time is about 3.5 hours. This trek's distance and uneven surfaces require participants to be accustomed to physical outdoor recreation. This hike is for those accustomed to regular activity and participants need to be physically fit. There are roots, rocks, log steps, and boardwalk sections that can be slippery when wet. Group Size & Age: This is a private guided hiking excursion and you can have up to 7 participants. The recommended minimum age is 7 years or older, please read our FAQ page for more information on age recommendations and transportation requirements for children under 8 years old. A parent, a legal guardian, or an adult family member must accompany participants under 18. Meeting Location: We can pick you up at your place of choice (your hotel, cruise dock, Airbnb, etc.) Included: Transportation to and from the trail, a knowledgeable local guide, bear and wilderness safety, snacks, hiking poles, sunscreen, and a bottle of water (we encourage participants to bring their own water bottle when possible to reduce single-use plastic waste).
