Trek Description

The Journey: The Harbor Mountain trail to the alpine shelter is a truly unforgettable experience, offering 360-degree views that will leave you in awe. As you hike above the treeline, you’ll be treated to sweeping vistas of Sitka Sound, Baranof Island, and the stunning Mt. Edgecumbe volcano. We’ll drive up an old WWII gravel road to the trailhead, which sits at 2,000 feet. The path takes you across rolling hills, which are blanketed in vibrant wildflowers during the summer, and in autumn, they transform into a breathtaking display of fall colors. Along the way, you’ll also spot eagles and ravens soaring high above, taking advantage of the wind currents that swirl through the mountains. The trail winds along the side of Harbor Mountain and crosses a dramatic rocky field, leading you to the alpine shelter. Once there, you’ll have time to rest and take in the spectacular views all around you. Whether you’re looking for an adventure with panoramic vistas or a moment to be fully immersed in nature, this hike offers both. Don’t miss the chance to experience one of Sitka’s most iconic trails! **If you are interested in a shorter hike in the alpine, please request a customizable hike.** Level of Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult.
