This hike is unique in that it connects multiple landscapes in a single experience. At different points along the route, you’ll move through dense old-growth rainforest, climb into alpine terrain above treeline, and follow the ridge to take in sweeping views in every direction. Sitka Sound, Mt. Edgecumbe, and the surrounding islands are often in full view, giving this hike a much bigger, more expansive feel than most trails in the area. There will be a break at the remote alpine hut, a perfect midway point to pause, take photos, and soak in the scenery of Harbor Mountain peak. Depending on the season, you’ll also pass through areas filled with wildflowers or rich fall colors, adding even more variety to the experience. This is one of those hikes where the entire journey delivers not just the destination.
