Trek Description

Trek Description: Embark on an unforgettable hike with Tongass Treks on the Gavan Hill & Harbor Mountain trail. Ascend steep switchbacks through hemlock and spruce to the Gavan Hill ridge for breathtaking panoramic views of Sitka Sound, Mt. Edgecumbe, and the rugged peaks of Baranof Island. The trail continues on rolling hills to the alpine hut which marks roughly the midpoint. Past the hut, the Harbor Mountain trail brings you through wildflowers in June and July and fall colors in August and September. *Note - This hike can be done in reverse from what is listed above on request. Please make mention of this request in the comment section during checkout.* Level of Difficulty: Difficult. The hiking time is about 4.5-5 hours. The distance, steep elevation gain, and uneven surfaces of this trek require participants to be accustomed to physical outdoor recreation in all kinds of weather, without any facilities of any kind, and only for those who are physically fit. Trail Condition: There are roots, rocks, log steps, and boardwalk sections that can be slippery when wet, and extra caution will need to be taken. Group Size & Age: This private trek can have up to 7 participants and recommends participants to be 10 years of age or older. Tongass Treks cannot legally transport children under 65 pounds and less than 57 inches tall unless you provide a car seat or booster seat for your child. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, a legal guardian, or adult family member. Please read our FAQ page for more information on age recommendations and requirements. Meeting Location: We can pick you up at your place of choice (your hotel, cruise dock, ferry, etc.) Included: Transportation to and from the trail, a knowledgeable local guide, bear and wilderness safety, snacks, hiking poles, sunscreen, and a bottle of water (but encourage participants to bring their own when possible to reduce single-use plastic waste).
